Jurisdiction

The original purpose for jurisdiction was to indicate ownership of a name record. For example, you may have someone in your organization who is responsible for your major donors. You would, in this example, set up the name of that person in the jurisdiction list. Now go to each name record and link that name to that person in the jurisdiction field. You can now use that field to get a list of the donors that person is responsible for. You can target mailings to them, check on their giving progress, produce a call list, etc.

Jurisdiction has also been used when staff members are responsible for raising personal support. They can be set up in the jurisdiction list and assigned to their donors as well.

Some organizations have used this field for other things. For example, radio stations who have multiple broadcast points with a variety of call letters have used this field to show which station their donors are listening to. This allows them to target mailings and other information to the correct audience.

This field is a little more flexible when it comes to reports than Name Type. It does allow you to include multiple jurisdictions as filters. You could, for example, get a list of names that are coded with Jurisdiction one or Jurisdiction two.

You will find the Jurisdiction field by clicking the Names button on the left then Name List Management and selecting the name record. Scroll down the page to find the field in the Development Managment section.

This is a drop down field so you will need to created the values for that field that are unique to your organization. Do that by clicking the Plus sign and the top of the page then selecting Jurisdictions. That page shows your current list. You can select one from the list to edit or click Add New to create a new Jurisidiction.

Jurisdiction
1

Description

Enter a Description. If this code will represent a staff person, then put that person's name here. If it represents a radio station, but that station's call letters here.
2

Code

The code is for Denari. It tells Denari that this record is different from any other jurisdiction record so it must be unique. You can use letters and numbers and other symbols like underscores and dashes.
3

Active ?

Denari won't allow you to delete a jurisdiction once it has been linked to a name record but you can make it Inactive by unchecking this box. That will remove it from the drop down field so that it can't be used again in the future.
4

Fund & Appeal

Denari provides a method for gift import based on jurisdiction. The upload spreadsheet contains a jurisdiction field for each gift. When Denari creates the gift record it will use the fund and appeal selected here for each gift related to that jurisdiction. These fields are optional and aren't needed if you are not using that gift import method.

Hit Save to save the new jurisdiction record.
