Codes

The first place to start is by understanding Denari's codes. Codes are simply ways to tag donors, gifts, pledges, and other data so that you can pull them out later for reports. If you are just setting up your codes the best place to start is by asking yourself, what kinds of reports or information will we want from Denari in the future. That will help you develop your set of codes. You need to be sure you understand how codes work before you go any further

All databases group information as 'Entities' which is a fancy way of saying that the information that is similar is all stored together. In Denari you will find names, gifts, pledges, sponsored names, field agents, for example. Each of these have their own set of codes and it is important to differentiate between them. There are gift codes, name codes, pledge codes, etc.

If you are able to understand the difference between gift codes and name codes, for example, that will make it easier later on to produce reports as you'll see when you work with segments. So try to keep them straight. Gift codes are different from name codes, etc.
