Appeal Codes

The Appeal Code tracks where the gift came from. It answers the question, "What fundraising function generated this gift?" Each time you initiate a fundraising function, like a golf tournament, a speaking engagement, a special letter that you send out, etc. you can create an appeal code to represent the gifts and pledges that are raised as a result. Coding your gifts with Appeal Codes allows you to get a list of gifts that were raised by event or function. It allows you to evaluate the success of those functions.

* An appeal code is required for each gift or pledge that you enter into Denari.

You can create a new appeal code in one of two ways. The easiest is to click the plus sign at the top of Denari then click New Appeal from the Quick Items menu. You can also click the plus sign and click on the Appeal Codes link in the Codes column. This will bring you to a list of your existing appeal codes. You can edit one of those by finding the one you want then clicking on it to open it. You can also click Add New from this page to create a new code. Either method brings you to the page below.

Appeal Codes
1

Description

This field is for you. It describes to you and your co-workers what this code is about. If you are holding a fundraising banquet, you might type ‘Spring Banquet 2018’
2

Appeal Code

This field is the identifier for Denari. It tells Denari that this appeal is different from any others so it must be unique. You can’t have two appeal codes the same. Some people keep this pretty simple and in our example we might enter SB18 there. Some users, however, have a strategy for their codes. For example, they might start all of their Banquet codes with a ‘B’ then give each one a number so their codes might be ‘B101’, B201, etc. Another type of fundraising effort might start with a different letter or set of letters followed by numbers. This can be helpful in reporting since we could use that to produce a list of gifts, for example, that have an appeal code that runs from B100 to B500. But from Denari’s perspective, the only requirement is that they be unique.
3

Beginning Date

This date is informational only. It tells you and others when this event took place. It cannot be used as a filter in reports.
4

Active ?

This box is used to make an appeal code inactive by unchecking the box. The big reason for this is that it removes this code from the drop down list in gift entry so that gifts can no longer be assigned to this appeal by mistake. It also makes the list shorter and more manageable.
5

Campaign ID

A campaign is a grouping function for several appeal codes and is covered in more detail in another topic. But, this is where you will link this appeal code to a campaign. It is a required field.
6

GL Code

The GL Code field is only informational. It allows you to relate this appeal back to an account, probably an expense account, in your accounting system. There are no reports that show this field nor can you filter on this field. It is just there as a reminder for you if needed.

7

Goal Fields

The Goals fields, can be discussed together. There is a report called Campaign Performance that will show you the revenue from appeals versus the costs and those costs come from these fields. It makes the assumption that your costs will be from mailings. But, some users have entered other costs into any of the cost fields, like Postage Cost, even though its not postage just so it will show up on that report.
8

Notes

The Notes field is there for you to enter anything you want. Again, it is only informational but anything you enter here could help other staff members understand what this appeal is about in the future.
The last section on the page is for Premiums. You may or may not see this in your Denari company depending on whether you have that module turned on or not. Generally premiums are used in conjunction with Denari’s radio or sharathon module but they can be used for other purposes as well. A premium is a gift in return for a donation. This section allows you to set up the appeal so that when someone makes a donation to this appeal, the gift assigned here will be automatically assigned to that donor. Premiums is covered in more detail in another section.

To complete the appeal code set up just hit Save in the button bar at the top. You'll see how to use Appeal Codes later in the gift entry section.
